Jesus doesn’t follow the rules. That may be surprising to some. Many think Jesus to be a goody two-shoes who followed every rule and pointed fingers at anyone who didn’t. While Jesus was perfect and never sinned, He broke A LOT of rules. In our reading this morning in Matthew chapter twelve, we see the religious people trying to make Jesus follow their religious rules. He didn’t and he wouldn’t. At one point He quoted scripture at the Pharisees, “I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.”
Think of it this way. Imagine you are in a church. It is more like a cathedral. Beautiful, magnificent, grandeur. Far away at the front of the altar sits a poor impoverished beggar. He is too weak to even pray out loud. In his thoughts he cries out to God for help. You are standing in the narthex of the church. In your hands you hold fresh bread, a bowl of hot soup, and a can of Moxie. You have just moments to bring sustenance to this man before he slips out of consciousness. All that stands in the way of this man’s survival is a sign that reads, “No Food Or Drink In The Sanctuary”.
What would Jesus do?
Jesus would have fed the man. Jesus would have broken the rules and He would have asked us to break the rules as well. Contrary to popular belief, Jesus doesn’t want us to follow the rules. He wants us to follow Him and change the world!
