Behind The Sermon Podcast

One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon. Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.

Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. When all the people saw him walking and praising God, they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.
— Acts 3:1-10

A Place Of Poverty

Poverty: the state of being inferior in quality or insufficient in amount. Sometimes, we can find ourselves in a place of spiritual poverty thinking, there isn’t enough of God for us.

In what ways do you find yourself in a spiritual poverty mindset?

In your prayer life, do you find yourself begging for God to hear you?

How could you shift your mindset to a place of expectation?

And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.
— Hebrews 11:6
Without faith, it is impossible to please God.
Without expectation, it is impossible to have faith.
— Pastor Nate Gagne

A PLACE OF FAITH

Faith shows us the reality of our expectations. Faith and Expectation go hand-in-hand.

Why do you think it is impossible to please God without Faith?

You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you
give them a stone instead? Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a
snake? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.
— Matthew 7:9-11

A Place of RECEIVING

Expectation moves you from a place of begging to a place of receiving.

Have you ever tried to barter with God?
(Example: “God if you do this, I’ll never swear again”)

What does a posture of receiving look like?

He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. 9 When all the people saw him walking and praising God, they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.
— Acts 3:8-10

A Place Of Praising

People are more likely to receive miracles from God and move on, rather than to stop and praise him for it.

How do you keep track of the miracles God does in your life?

How can the theme of praise and expectation be applied to your daily life?

Application
