Behind The Sermon Podcast

Before we get started in this study, Can we just pause for a second and celebrate that our church came in as the 11th in the country for speed the light giving?! Praise God! Ok, Back to the sermon!

Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.”
So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian[a] eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means “queen of the Ethiopians”). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.”

Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked. “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. This is the passage of Scripture the eunuch was reading:

“He was led like a sheep to the slaughter,
and as a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth. In his humiliation he was deprived of justice.
Who can speak of his descendants?
For his life was taken from the earth. The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.

As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?” And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him.

My Unwavering Yes

What about this message stood out to you?

When you hear stories of Christian persecution like Pastor Eric Hoffman told, What goes through your mind?

The key to spiritual growth is the willingness to go out of your way for God. You will find God in uncomfortable places at inconvenient times, and if you go out of your way for God, God will go out of his way for you!

Discomfort and Inconvenience

How might the comfort of your life hold you back from the call of God?

Does the idea that God might call you to something excite you, or scare you? Explain.

How can you make a step into your call? How can believers around you help?

God speaks, I obey, God explains, maybe.
— R.T. Kendall

God, You got some splaining to do..

What is your relationship with ambiguity?

Talk about a time you followed something the Lord asked you to do. How much detail did you have and how did that impact your decision to do it?

Examine your prayer life, Do ask for more details than opportunities? Maybe you are praying for a miracle and ask God for very specific answers. This could be an indication that you are uncomfortable with letting God control the outcomes.

Application

Take some time and talk about what you feel God is calling you to do. How can the believers around you encourage you and keep you accountable to move forward?
